Basically, a lead is generated through the collection of information. This information can come as the result of a number of things such as: giving one's email address for newsletters in exchange for coupons, filling up a form to gain access to content such as a trial, ebook or a podcast, completing an application for a particular job - ultimately, they provide the company with their information.

When people see ads on their social media pages or while they are surfing the internet, they might click on it if it seems relevant to them. Once they do, they are taken to a company's landing page. This landing page can serve different purposes, the most common of which is to generate leads through the means of forms. These forms consist of a series of fields that is designed to collect information from an individual in exchange for the following:
1. Offers - This is something of value that is offered to an individual on the landing page. The offer must be valuable and relevant enough for a visitor to provide their personal information (email address) in order to access it.
2. Call-to-Action - Call to action or CTA can be a message, button or an image that coaxes a visitor to take some sort of action. When lead generation is concerned, this action can be filling out a form in the landing page or purchasing a product.
